VOODOO DONUTS

it is written on the stars that my favorite foods are popcorn and sushi.
blueberries are a close third.
but for my sweet tooth?
the donut sings my siren song.

i don't keep these beautiful rings of sugar anywhere nearby while at home,
but on the road, they are mandatory roadie rider food.
they are there every day, really, EVERY DAY.

there is a rule I share with those who work with me:
"if you see me with a donut, slap it out of my hand"
and this Has happened. I have been donut-smacked.

while on tour with the mighty Motley Crue, our stop in Portland contained a surprise...

(here we are celebrating Tommy's birthday)

we opened our sleepy little road weary eyes to pink boxes with amazing things inside,
labelled VOODOO DONUTS.

in the boxes I was to put in the band's dressing rooms:
for Vince, Nikki & Mick:

for Tommy, this we found:

if you don't get it, that's ok. you'll just need to brush up on your Tommy Lee lore.

so while in Portland this last week for the CORALINE premiere (full account here)
Drew and I went to Voodoo Donuts to see what they were all about.

it was a chilly Sunday morning but the place was fully crowded, when we got inside, a line was running outside.
The smell of baking donuts was knock-out amazing. The decor was punk-slasher-donuty goodness.

here is their menu, and Drew was very disappointed that they were OUT of the blood-fliied. He settled for a bacon maple bar,
which sounded like a bad idea even to this donut lover. If you look closely, you can see in the bottom right hand the price for what they sent on over to the Crue boys...now, do you get it?

here is the sweet perfection that I chose, a plain cake with chocolate frosting...can you taste it?

more Portland adventures, next installment....

Damn you Kitty - I want a donut right now. Thank goodness there are none in the house!

I don't eat donuts usually, but that store looks incredible. And your donut actually looks delicious. Was it?

But the million dollar question, my burning curiousity is with the bacon donut. Did it really have bacon on or in it and more importantly, was it any good?

I must say that I am not too fond of doughnuts because of the blighter being both fried and sweet. If I am about to have a round thing with a hole in the middle, let it be a bagel.
But that place looks fabulous. Good idea you guys check it out. And great on oyu for staying away from the little blighters while on tour.

That looks very tempting. I'm glad I don't live near that shop! :)

the answer, sweet Ticia, yes, that thing had TWO slices of bacon on it and I wouldn't even try a bite.
Drew wolfed it down and then 30 minutes later had serious buyer's remorse....!
but mine? mine was heavenly.

I think they could rename that place "Sweet Buyer's Remorse" and I would still frequent it.

Dan Guy said it right

Oh, poor Drew! Two slices of bacon ::shudder:: You have to give them credit for being creative, though. I'm glad yours was tasty.

Good call Dan!

I can't even recall the last time I ate a doughnut. But yes, I can taste it indeed.

Actually I love bacon and mapple together, the idea of having them on orin a doughnut on the other hand...
Yeah. A bit too fat for my sensitive stomach.

Nathalie, I think bacon and maple together really WOULD be a lot to handle!

I'm glad you enjoyed your visit to Voodoo Donuts. :)
I haven't wanted a donut in a very long time, nor do I miss them. :)

Bravo, Dan Guy!

On another note-- Drew just had a true Canadian donut. Everything has bacon and maple. Required by law. Mountie Food, Due South.

My choice would be yours. I can smell it, SeesterMine....

Now ironic; the day I first read this, I read that Krispy Kremes may be filing for bankrupty! (Never cared much for Krisy Kremes, too sweet , I'm a Winchel's doughnut gal.) Now, with this "Economic Slow Down" a.k.a. "World Drepression"; you would think that people would be seeking cold comfort with a sweet doughnut and a warm cup of coffee. Brother can you spare a dime? Love you! Geri
